These shrubs can be found near river bands, sandy beaches and even the mangroves. Their leaves, fruits and roots are known as a type of antiperiodic and a tonic for treatment of kidney stones and bladder stones.
There are some lesson common names for this shrub such as Squirrel's Claw, Kuku Tupai and the Crested Fever Nut.
Benefits of Caesalpinia Crista Linn Seed
This study focused on ability of C. crista leaf aqueous extract on the prevention of (i) the formation of oligomers and aggregates from monomers
The results showed that C. crista aqueous extract could able to inhibit the Aβ(42) aggregation from monomers and oligomers and also able to dis-aggregate the pre-formed fibrils. The study provides an insight on finding new natural products for AD therapeutics.
Alzheimer's Disease - The present study was conducted in order to evaluate the neuroprotective effects of methanolic extracts of C. crista (MECC) on aluminium-induced neurodegeneration in rats. Co-administration with MECC significantly and dose dependently ameliorated the aluminium-dependent cognitive impairment, AChE hyperactivity and oxidative stress in the hippocampus and in the frontal cortex of rat brain.
From this study, it is inferred that MECC protect against aluminium-induced behavioral alterations, cognitive function, oxidative stress and neuroinflammation in vivo.
Therefore, this plant may serve as a source of natural products having multiple functions and could be utilized as an anti-AD preparation.
Anthelmintic Activity - The present study was carried out to determine the anthelmintic activity of Caesalpinia crista (L.) (Fabaceae) seed kernel and Chenopodium album (L.) (Chenopodiaceae) whole plant in order to justify their traditional use in veterinary medicine.
Both plants exhibited dose- and time-dependent anthelmintic effects by causing mortality of worms and inhibition of egg hatching.
These data show that both Caesalpinia crista and Chenopodium album possess anthelmintic activity in vitro and in vivo, thus, justifying their use in the traditional medicine system of Pakistan.
Anti-Inflammatory - The present study is aimed to understand the anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory potential of C. asiatica and C. crista leaf extracts. The anti-inflammatory activities of aqueous extracts of C. crista and C. asiatica were studied using 5-lipoxygenase assay. Polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNLs) were isolated from blood by Ficoll-Histopaque density gradient followed by hypotonic lysis of erythrocytes.
The better activity of C. crista is attributed to high gallic acid and ferulic acid compared to C. asiatica.
Hepatoprotective - The present study was carried out to evaluate the ameliorating effect of Caesalpinia crista Linn. (CCME) extract on iron-overload-induced liver injury. Iron overload was induced by intraperitoneal administration of iron dextran into mice.
In presence of CCME, the reductive release of ferritin iron was increased significantly. Furthermore, CCME exhibited DPPH radical scavenging and protection against Fe2+-mediated oxidative DNA damage.
The current study confirmed the hepatoprotective effect of CCME against the model hepatotoxicant iron overload and the activity is likely related to its potent antioxidant and iron-chelating property.
Nootropic - The Present work was undertaken to assess the potential of dried seed kernels of Ceasalpinia crista extract as learning and memory enhancer. Aqueous extract of dried seed kernels of Ceasalpinia crista linn. ameliortated the amnesic effect of scopolamine in mice.
Redial arm maze andMorries water maze paradigm served as the exteroceptive behavioral models. Aqueous extract of dried seed kernels of Caesalpinia crista linn. is compered with standered drug piracetam in scopolamine induced amnesia in mice. Aqueous extract Caesalpinia crista linn. could beneficial to improve cognition in disorders like dementia and various neurodegenerative disorders.
Anti-Diabetic - The present study was designed to evaluate antidiabetic activity of ethanolic and aqueous seed extracts of Caesalpinia cristalinn. in streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetes in 2 days old pups models. The seeds were collected, authenticated and shade dried. Shade dried seeds were then grinded into coarse powder and processed for further studies.
There was a significant decrease in the biological parameters that is,serum glucose, cholesterol and triglyceride when compared with diabetic untreated group after 3 weeks treatment plant extracts. Treatment with the extracts also affected the physical parameters like decrease in body weight, increase in demand of food intake and water intake when compared with diabetic untreated group.
The study showed that both ethanolic and aqueous seed extracts of C.cristalinn. showed antidiabetic activity, but the aqueous extract of C.cristalinn. showed more significant effect as compared to the ethanolic extract.
